The Animal Center of Moore County was completed in July 2002 to provide shelter for the county's unwanted and stray companion animals. As the county grows, so does the number of these unfortunate animals. In 2007, we took in almost 5000 dogs and cats- a twenty percent increase in the last two years. Although we have one of the highest adoption rates in the state, far too many adoptable animals have to be put down to make room for others. We urge everyone to be responsible and (unless you are a breeder) have your have your animal spayed or neutered. It is the humane thing to do and less expensive in the long run. We are very proud of our sparkling clean shelter, and encourage all citizens of Moore County to come and visit us. The selection of adoptable animals is very large, and our fees are very reasonable. |

Each day the Moore County Animal Center receives many calls concerning lost or found animals. It is an unfortunate fact of life that very few animals we take in or pick up as strays have identification. The consequence of this is that only about 4% of animals which come to us are returned to their owners. North Carolina law requires that all dogs be equipped with a collar bearing the owner's contact information- and of course, rabies tags. An additional safeguard would be to identify your pet with a microchip which is an electronic identifier about the size of a grain of rice inserted by injection in the anima's' neck. All animals entering any shelter or veterinary office are scanned for microchip identification. This method is recommended as it is the only permanent method of identification. We provide this service at the Animal Center for a ten dollar fee. For the current listing of lost and found dogs and cats updated 8/15/08, click here

In 2007 The Animal Center of Moore County took in almost 5000 animals. We can house about a hundred. Although we have one of the highest adoption rates in the state, we still are forced to euthanize far too many adoptable animals. It is our goal is to become a no kill shelter as that term is defined by the Humane Society of the United States. The only way that will ever be possible, is for Moore County citizens, who do not have a need to allow their animals to reproduce, to have them spayed or neutered. Please help us to end this heart wrenching situation. If cost is the only factor in keeping you from doing the responsible thing, please go to the Companion Animal Website for information on low cost spay/neuter. http://www.companionanimalclinic.org/ |
